Sustainability at Oudijk Gerbera
Sustainability is paramount at Oudijk!
LED Lighting
By 2021 and 2022, 50% of traditional light bulbs have been replaced with LED, these bulbs save 50% on electricity use! LED lighting is the most sustainable way of lighting.
Electric water heater
Starting in late 2023, we will use an E-Boiler to generate heat with green electricity, saving up to 25-35% gas. This E-Boiler is also used by TenneT to balance the Dutch power grid, turning it on when the voltage gets too high.
Solar Panels
We process our Germinis with green energy using, among other things, 1,200 solar panels installed on our barn. This is comparable to the amount of Kwh consumed by 100 households per year.
Dehumidification
In 2018 and 2019, we invested in a dehumidification system. This system extracts moisture from the air that previously had to be fired from the greenhouse by heat. This Dry-Gair system reduces gas consumption by 40%!
Double screen cloth
Closing these double cloths saves up to 75% energy in winter!
Cooling
In the hot summer, roof irrigation of the greenhouse is used. The cold water sprayed on the greenhouse cools the greenhouse. The windows are closed for this purpose, again saving CO₂.
Recycling
All excess water given to the plants is collected. It is decontaminated so it can be reused. This way, no water and fertilizer is lost and does not enter surface water!
Biology
Pests and diseases are controlled as much as possible with natural enemies and plant protection products of natural origin (GNO). This minimizes the use of chemicals.
Water collection
We collect all rainwater in a basin. In winter, we collect the water in special wells built for this purpose underground. Thus, no water is lost and there is sufficient water supply in summer.
Hallmark
We have several MPS certifications: MPS-GAP: The delivery certificate for retail, demonstrating traceability, safety and hygiene. MPS-Socially Qualified: The certificate for good working conditions. MPS-ABC: The certificate demonstrating that Oudijk gerbera is the most environmentally friendly.

Optimal growth for top quality
All these techniques each contribute to optimal growth of a top quality Germini and also to less burden on the environment!
